Why a Steeper Ramp Makes the Ball Go Faster

Have you ever noticed that a gentle slide feels slow but a steep one feels fast? A tiny web game called The Ramp lets you play with that idea. You tilt a ramp, drop a ball, and watch what happens.

#What you do

You pick how steep the ramp is. Make it almost flat, or tilt it up high. Then you let the ball go and watch it roll to the bottom. On a gentle ramp the ball dawdles. On a steep ramp it races. You can play it and try both for yourself.

#What is really happening

Gravity always pulls the ball straight down toward the ground. But the ball cannot go straight down, because the ramp is in the way. So only part of that pull works along the slope, and the rest just presses into the ramp. When the ramp is gentle, only a small part of gravity pulls the ball along, so it rolls slowly. When the ramp is steep, a much bigger part pulls along the slope, so the ball speeds up fast. Steeper ramp, bigger pull, faster roll.

Think of pushing a friend on a swing. A soft push barely moves them. A strong push sends them flying. A steep ramp is a bit like that strong push, given to the ball the whole way down.

This idea is everywhere once you look for it. A gentle wheelchair ramp is easy and slow. A steep playground slide sends you zooming to the bottom. Skiers pick steep hills to go fast and gentle ones to take it easy. A ball on a flat floor barely moves at all, because almost none of gravity is pulling it sideways.
