Imagine a room full of heavy boxes, and your job is to slide each one onto a colored spot on the floor. Sounds easy, right? There is one catch. You can only push a box, never pull it. That one little rule turns a simple chore into a real brain teaser.

You walk around a small grid and push boxes, one at a time. To move a box, you stand behind it and shove. When every box is sitting on its target spot, you win.
Because you can only push, you have to be careful. If you shove a box into a corner, it is stuck forever. You cannot walk around to the other side and pull it back out. One careless push can ruin the whole level, and then you have to start over.
#What is really happening
This game has a grown-up name. It is called planning. Planning means thinking about your moves before you make them, so that a good move now does not create a mess later.
It is a bit like packing a suitcase. If you throw the big shoes in last, they will not fit. You have to picture the finished suitcase before you begin. In the box game, you picture where every box needs to end up, then work out the order of pushes that gets them there without trapping any of them.
Winning needs foresight. You often have to plan many moves ahead, sometimes the whole level at once.
#Where it shows up
Here is the surprising part. This puzzle is genuinely hard for computers too. A computer can try moves very fast, but the number of possible move orders grows enormous, so even a clever machine can get stuck thinking. Scientists study puzzles like this to learn how robots might one day tidy a warehouse or pack a truck without boxing themselves into a corner.
