Point an Arrow, Meet an Angle

Turning is something you already know. You spin to face a friend, you swing a door open, you twist a bottle cap. An angle is just a way to put a number on that turn. This little game lets you feel it with your own hands. You do not need any special maths to begin, only a steady hand and a curious eye.

#What you do

You see a dot somewhere on the screen. You turn an arrow until it points straight at the dot. Then you read the number off a protractor, the half circle marked with lines. That number is the angle. When you are ready, play it and aim at a few dots. The closer your arrow lands to the dot, the better your reading. Miss by a bit and you simply turn again until it feels right.

#What is really happening

An angle measures turning. Start at zero, which means no turn at all. Turn a little and the number grows. A quarter turn, like the corner of a book or a window, is 90. That square corner is the one you see everywhere. Half of 90 is 45, a gentle slant like the pointed corner of a slice of pizza. Keep going to a half turn and you reach 180, where the arrow points the opposite way. A full spin, all the way back to where you started, is 360. So every angle from 0 to 360 is just a slice of one complete circle of turning.

#Where it shows up

Once you notice turning, you see angles all day. The hands of a clock sweep through them. A skateboarder who lands a 180 has spun halfway around. A door barely cracked open makes a small angle, and a door flat against the wall makes a big one. When you throw a ball or steer a bike, you are choosing angles without thinking. Reading the protractor in the game trains your eye, so later you can guess an angle without any tool at all.
