#What you do

You pick two carts. One can be heavy, like a shopping cart loaded with water bottles. The other can be light, like an empty basket. You send them straight at each other and let them crash head-on. Then you watch what happens to their speeds. You can play it and test as many weights as you like. Watch closely, because the real surprise is in the speeds right after they touch.

#What is really happening

There is a hidden number that stays the same all the way through the crash. Grown-ups call it momentum. It is really just weight times speed, added up for both carts together. Before the crash and after the crash, that total is exactly the same. Nothing sneaks in, and nothing leaks out. Momentum is a bit like money in a locked box. You can move it between the two carts, but the total amount can never grow or vanish.

Because of this rule, a heavy cart barely changes its speed when a light cart hits it. The light cart, on the other hand, bounces back fast. Think of a marble thrown hard at a bowling ball. The marble zips backward. The bowling ball hardly seems to care.
